To judge the quality of denim fabric, you can comprehensively evaluate its appearance, feel, craftsmanship, composition, and details, taking into account the fabric's practicality and durability. The specific method is as follows:

1. Appearance: Observe the overall texture and details.

Color and Color Fastness: High-quality denim has a uniform, rich color, especially the classic indigo blue, which is pure and has no gray or white cast (unwashed). Gently rub the surface of the fabric or press it with a wet tissue. If the color easily fades (the wet tissue is noticeably stained and difficult to wipe off), it indicates poor color fastness and is inferior. Good denim is pre-shrunk and color-fixed, so slight color floating is normal and will not fade significantly after repeated rubbing.

Grain and Weave: High-quality denim has a clear and regular twill, with closely aligned warp and weft yarns, and no obvious yarn breaks, skipped yarns, or weft showthrough (excessive weft yarn showing through). A chaotic grain, visible pinholes or defects, or easily frayed edges indicate poor weaving.

Washing Effect (for washed denim): Good washed denim will have natural, realistic bleaching, whiskering, and rips, with even transitions and no harsh spots or discoloration. Furthermore, the surface should remain smooth after washing, without noticeable wrinkles or stiffness.

2. Hand Feel: Experiencing the fabric's texture and comfort.

Thickness and Weight: The weight (weight per square meter) of denim typically ranges from 200-400g. The higher the weight, the thicker and more durable the fabric. However, thicker is not necessarily better; it depends on the intended use (e.g., a lightweight 200-250g denim is suitable for summer, while a heavier 300g denim is suitable for winter). High-quality fabric will have a solid feel, without any looseness or bulk.

Softness and Flexibility: 100% cotton denim is pre-shrunk and softened to give it a soft, skin-friendly feel, not stiff or prickly. Stretch denim (containing spandex) rebounds quickly after stretching, preventing any loosening or deformation, allowing for comfortable movement. Fabric that is too stiff or brittle, or with poor elasticity and inability to recover after stretching, is a sign of inferior quality.

Fineness: Repeatedly rubbing the surface of high-quality denim will reveal a smooth, smooth surface with no noticeable roughness or graininess. Roughness and prickly fiber bumps may indicate poor cotton fiber quality or insufficient weaving density.

3. Checking the Craftsmanship: Pay Attention to Detailed Finishing

Overlocking and Stitching: Observe the overlocking of the fabric edges. High-quality denim has neat, tight overlocking, and no skipped or untied stitches. For garments, the stitching should be even and smooth, closely fitting the fabric, and with a moderate stitch density (too sparse can cause cracking, while too dense can damage the fabric).

Pre-shrinkage: High-quality denim is pre-shrinked before leaving the factory, keeping shrinkage to within 3% during subsequent washing (according to national standards). You can ask the manufacturer if pre-shrinkage is used, or conduct a small area test: soak the fabric in warm water for 10 minutes, let it dry, and measure the dimensions. If there is significant shrinkage (over 5%), it indicates poor pre-shrinkage and poor quality.

Accessories (for finished products): For finished products such as jeans, high-quality products should have thick, finely crafted buttons, zippers, rivets, and other accessories. Zippers should operate smoothly, and buttons and rivets should be securely fastened and not easily loosened.

4. Ingredients: Choose the appropriate material based on your needs.

Natural Fiber Content: Denim primarily made of cotton is preferred. Cotton fibers are breathable, absorb moisture, and are comfortable and durable. For blended fabrics, pay attention to the fiber ratio. For example, a stretchy fabric with a blend of cotton and spandex (typically 3%-5% spandex) ensures comfort and increases elasticity. If the chemical fiber content is too high (e.g., over 20%), the fabric's breathability and feel will decrease, and its durability will also be reduced.

Authenticity of Special Materials: If a merchant claims "organic cotton denim" or "recycled denim," ask to see relevant certifications (such as organic cotton certification or recycled fiber certification) to avoid false advertising.

5. Durability Testing: A Simple Test of Fabric Sturdiness

Tensile Test: Grasp the fabric at both ends with both hands and gently stretch it. High-quality fabrics exhibit a certain degree of resilience when stretched and will not tear easily. After release, there should be no noticeable deformation. If it feels brittle or easily breaks when stretched, it indicates insufficient strength.

Abrasion Test: Gently rub the surface with a coin or fingernail. High-quality denim will not pill or fuzz easily. If pilling or fiber shedding is noticeable after rubbing, the fabric has poor wear resistance and a short lifespan.
